What is a Community Choice School?
A Community Choice Public School means a tuition-free, public school open to all students in the state of Montana that has autonomy over school governing decisions including, but not limited to, matters concerning finance, personnel, scheduling, curriculum, and instruction as defined in its charter contract. Community Choice Public Schools provide free educational options that may include any or all grades from kindergarten through grade 12.
Community Choice Schools are called charter schools in other states.
They have been around for more than 30 years in forty-four states.
Community Choice Public Schools are publicly funded.
Just like all other public schools, they never charge tuition.
Community Choice Public Schools accept any student.
Montana’s Community Choice Public School law and regulations ensure that each student has an equal opportunity to enroll.
Parent Story
Hear about what is driving the creation of Community Choice Public Schools.
In too many communities—especially rural communities—every student does not have access to high-quality public school options. Community Choice Public Schools aim to change this. Community Choice Public Schools put families in charge of their children’s education, principals in charge of their schools, teachers in charge of leading their classrooms, and students in charge of their futures.
We do things differently here in Montana. While other states use the term "charter schools," Montana calls these independently run public schools Community Choice Public Schools. Read on to learn how Community Choice Schools are unique and different from other public schools.
